MANAGEMENT (OM’S MM)
Mosquitoes probably have greater influence on human health and well-being throughout the world than any other pest insect. Mosquitoes are vectors of some serious diseases like Malaria, Filariasis, Dengue, Chikungunya, Japanese Encephalitis etc. They are familiar and annoying pests. The female mosquitoes suck blood from the humans or animals and may transmit diseases to them. Mosquitoes cause loss of sleep, restlessness and serious nervous irritation.
Egg
- These are very small and laid singly on the water surface
- The female mosquito lays her eggs in standing or slow moving water
- These hatch into larvae after 2-3 days
Larva
- The larvae feed on micro-organisms and organic matter in the water
- Develop into pupae after 7-10 days
Pupa
- The pupal stage is a resting non-feeding stage
- This is the stage that the mosquito turns into an adult
- Adults emerge in 1-2 days
Adult
- After a few days the pupal skin splits and the mosquito emerges as an adult
- Life of adult mosquito female is about 1 month
Integrated Mosquito Management
Mosquito management is a complex activity as these insects usually breed outdoors in easily available water sources like drains, ponds, nullahs, artificial containers etc. and visit indoors to draw blood from the human hosts. Breeding sites elimination is long term solution.
Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS)
The formulation is diluted in water at a recommended dosage and sprayed on the four walls of the room and ceiling surfaces, with the help of cold fogging or spray pump.
Benefits
- When the mosquitoes enter structure and rest on the walls, they come in contact with the insecticide and get knocked down
- Long-lasting residual control on a wide range of surfaces
- Highly flexible tool for vector control recommended by WHO as a residual treatment
- Odourless
